Timothy Stacey

Timothy Stacey is a Researcher and Lecturer at the Urban Futures Studio, Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University. Tim employs categories from the study of religion to understand what inspires people to engage in political processes: magic, myth, ritual, tradition. He is the author of Saving Liberalism From Itself: The Spirit of Political Participation, which stressed the absence of "spirit" in liberal politics and policymaking, and ethnographically explored how spirit is revivified in spaces of grassroots citizen engagement. His Religious Repertoires of Sustainability: Why religion is central to sustainability transitions, whatever you believe transfers these arguments to environmental science and policy. Empirically, Tim's focus is simultaneously exploring where and why science and policy gets stuck, and what can be learnt from artists, activists, and direct actors.
